ISLA MUJERES TEMPLE OF IXCHEL At Punta Sur
In 1517, the conquistador Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba was the first European to arrive at Isla Mujeres. He and his men found clay statuettes in the shape of a woman in a Mayan temple, that place was the temple dedicated to the goddess Ixchel. Because of this finding, Isla Mujeres was given this name.
Ixchel is the Mayan goddess of the moon, love and fertility. This ancient temple dedicated to her is located at the southern tip of the island. It is a unique enclave of the Mayan world along the coast of the Caribbean Sea.
Punta Sur
