Best Resort For Snorkeling & Scuba on Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres offers some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the vicinity of Cancun. Our island, after all, lies along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System—aka the Great Mayan Reef—which is the largest barrier-reef complex in the Western Hemisphere (and second worldwide only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef). Our local waters attract some spectacular concentrations of marine life and happen to conceal some improbable cultural treasures as well.
With a resort home base here at Privilege Aluxes, you’ve got the underwater world of Isla Mujeres’ Mexican Caribbean at your fingertips, whether it’s a snorkel or a scuba tank you prefer donning! (Heck, maybe both!)
Snorkeling on Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres offers truly world-class snorkeling. On the southern part of the island, Garrafon Natural Park serves as one of the hotspots for the activity: You can explore the local reef and its finned denizens on your own, or sign onto a guided snorkeling tour. It’s a great starting-off point for beginners!
We’re right at the start, meanwhile, of whale-shark season here on Isla Mujeres: perhaps the marine spectacle our island is best known for. Between May and September every year, the world’s biggest shark species—a harmless filter-feeder and an absolute beauty—gathers here to feast on fish eggs, shrimp, and other tiny morsels in one of the most significant aggregations of its kind in the world. This translates to some of the best opportunities to snorkel alongside these gigantic and good-natured fish, which may exceed 40 feet and 20 tons, anywhere on the planet.
Another globally significant wildlife thrill takes place in January and February, when great numbers of swift, elegant sailfish assemble in our nearshore waters to feast on sardines. Prime sportfishing quarry, the sailfish are increasingly their own ecotourism draw as well: It’s absolutely unforgettable to snorkel next to these fabulously fleet hunters as they draw in the bait-balls tight.
For those looking to go deeper and stay down longer, Isla Mujeres is also outstanding as a diving destination. From Manchones Reef to the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks, there are some incredible opportunities to swim among tropical fish and coral formations on your Privilege Aluxes getaway.
Another iconic underwater attraction open to both snorkelers and divers is MUSA: the Museo Subaquático de Arte, or Cancun Underwater Museum. Here you’ll find better than 500 sunken sculptures—from a lifesize Volkswagen Bug to numerous human figures—serving as artificial reef structures for marine life.
